Phranc is a guitarist and vocalist best known for her contributions to the 70s punk scene in Los Angeles (Catholic Discipline and Castration Squad) and her later career as ‘The All-American, Jewish, Lesbian Folksinger.’ In this oral history, Phranc discusses her upbringing in Mara Vista, CA, her introduction to the guitar at age 9, knowing that she was a lesbian from a young age, and how she dropped out of high school to pursue art, music, and the pivotal moment she discovered The Women’s Center, the lesbian feminist movement and her subsequent activist work. She details her introduction to the Los Angeles punk scene and her involvement in it, and how she transitioned to performing as Phranc. She discusses notable tours, collaborations and her experience with the music industry, as well as her career in the Tupperware industry. She closes with her thoughts on the visibility of women in rock history and musicians who have been particularly important to her.
